The Tribal Government Retirement System (TGRS) was born out
of a Michigan Tribe’s need for assistance in retaining Tribal employees. The
Municipal Employees’ Retirement System of Michigan (MERS) responded by
supporting legislation that expanded the definition of a municipality. This
reclassification has allowed MERS to create TGRS.
Tribes may choose from three products that are specifically
tailored to meet their needs. The Defined Benefit Program, Defined Contribution Program, and the Generations Income Savings Plan have been designed to attract, retain and
provide members with a stable future.
